Today, Lady Gaga is one of the most successful entertainers in the world. But getting here was not without its challenges.

According to Today, the singer once revealed, while speaking at an LGBT homeless shelter, that her own trauma has helped her to understand the trauma of others which inspires her to help as many people as possible.

Lady Gaga's mother shares some details

Cynthia Germanotta, Lady Gaga's mom, recently spoke on CBS This Morning about how her daughter went through some mental health struggles when she was younger.

Speaking about her daughter, she described "Stefani" as "very unique" but as a result, she wasn't really understood and appreciated by her peers.

Humiliated, taunted, isolated. When you're a young woman, this really severely impacts you.

Cynthia went on to say that things escalated when Lady Gaga got into middle school.

She went from a very happy and aspirational young girl to somebody that started to question her self-worth, to have doubts about herself and that is when we actually saw the turn.

Germanotta said she was initially unsure of how to help her daughter.

I didn't know what to look for. As a parent, I wasn't prepared to really address this.

The mom said that she hopes people will learn from her experiences and validate their children's feelings if something like this comes up. She encouraged parents to open up and be vulnerable, in a bid to teach their children to do the same.
