'Hawaii Five-0' Star Daniel Dae Kim Was Forced To Leave The Series After Producers Refused To Give Him A Pay Raise

Back in 2017, the hearts of Hawaii Five-0 fans shattered when they heard that Daniel Dae Kim will not be returning for season 8 of the series.

CBS handled the abrupt departure of one of its main characters very respectfully. As they mentioned in a statement:

Needless to say, Daniel has been an instrumental part of the success of Hawaii Five-0 over the past seven seasons and it has personally been a privilege to know him.

Still, the question as to why Daniel turned his back on Hawaii Five-0 kept burning a hole in the back of our minds. Finally, we know the answer.

Why did Daniel Dae Kim leave Hawaii Five-0?

In an article published by New York Times, Daniel Dae Kim foreshadowed his exit from the CBS series by talking about how difficult it is for people of color to achieve competitive pay in Hollywood:

The harsh reality of being an actor is that it’s hard to make a living, and that puts actors of color in a very difficult position.

Unfortunately, the actor was speaking from experience, as multiple sources, including Variety and Cinemablend, cite salary dispute as the reason for Dae Kim's departure.

Interestingly, that same year, Daniel's co-star Grace Park also left Hawaii Five-0 for the exact same reason. Reportedly, Alex O'Loughlin and Scott Caan got significant pay raises ahead of season 8, while Daniel and Grace were left out.

In that case, we can't blame Dae Kim and Park for the decision they made.

Daniel Dae Kim is doing well for himself these days

Leaving Hawaii Five-0 didn't mean the end for the handsome actor. Nowadays, Daniel Dae Kim is part of the regular cast for the incredibly popular medical show The Good Doctor.
