Two Teachers Mocked Their Student With Disorder By Giving Her "Most Likely To Not Pay Attention" Award

Most people know by now that ADHD is a real and serious condition. But some still don’t realize that problems with behavior and attention in kids with ADHD are not a fault in character. One recent case proves that public awareness about attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is lacking, even among educators.

A mock award
One 8-grader from Georgia received a mock award inscribed with “Most likely to not pay attention”. Apparently, the girl’s teachers failed to take her ADHD seriously.

When the girl came home with this “award”, her mother saw it and was beside herself. The woman told Fox 5 News:
I feel like it was very derogatory. I feel like it was humiliating. My first thought was, I wanted to know how my child felt when she walked across that stage and got that award. I became furious.
Nichole Edwards, the mom, decided she couldn’t let those responsible for her daughter’s humiliation off the hook. She filed a complaint, and the two teachers who put her daughter down “will not be returning to work”, according to the officials.

ADHD is a very common disorder among children. According to the CDC, 11% of American children, ages 4 to 17, are affected by it. The disorder can have a serious negative effect on academic performance and social relationships of those affected. Many children who have ADHD will “outgrow” it by the time they reach young adulthood, but a significant number of kids with ADHD will become adults with ADHD.

This incident goes on to show that the society at large still has to learn that ADHD and other mental disorders should be taken seriously. This is especially true for teachers, as they are supposed to be supportive and understanding towards kids with ADHD.
