It doesn’t come as a surprise that teens are prone to various stupid and dangerous challenges in which they sometimes hurt themselves or others. Minni Florence of La Vernia, Texas, was in shock when her seventh-grader, who is in special education, came home from school with a bright-red handprint on his back.

According to Minni, her son was in the locker room when his classmate approached him and slapped him on the back with all his might. Naturally, the boy notified his coach and the school administration, but according to his mom, the incident wasn’t handled the way it should have been. She told KABB-TV, a Fox affiliate:

The coach told him when he got home to just have a parent take a picture of it and email it to the school. They weren’t sent to the principal’s office. They weren’t sent to nurse to have it looked at. Nothing.

The mom wouldn’t let it slide. She wrote in a post on Facebook:

I immediately reported it to the school in person and was told that they would handle it. I however have contacted the police department while his dad reported it to the superintendent. This is absolutely unacceptable, parents be aware of this game and warn your children that if they participate in this there will be serious repercussions, and if they are a victim, contact La Vernia police department.

According to Minni, this 'challenge' is a serious issue which should be treated as an assault.

KABB-TV contacted the school for comment, and the school's statement said they were investigating this and related incidents and the necessary disciplinary action was taken against the student who hit Minni’s son and other participants of the challenge.

How to talk to your kids about Internet challenges

Some challenges, such as the Ice Bucket Challenge, are fun to take part in and help the good cause. However, many challenges you see on the Internet are dangerous and harmful to teens who participate in them.

Here are a few tips on how to talk to your child about challenges and help them make the right decisions:

  1. Stay up to date on emerging challenges and other trends that are popular among teens. You may casually mention such a challenge to your child and ask them what they think about it.
  2. Tell your child what you think about the challenge and what consequences it may lead to, in legal terms and health-wise. Better still, ask your child more questions about their opinion on this challenge to help them realize its potential consequences on their own. Ask questions such as “What do you think could be the worst outcome for a participant of this challenge?” without implying your child may be the one to participate in that.
  3. Almost every teen has accounts on social media. Stay connected with your child on these platforms to see what they’ve been up to. Take a look at your child’s friends’ pages on social media as well.
  4. Ask your child about trends their circle of friends are interested in. Remain calm and composed if the subject of some dangerous challenge comes up and try to have an open conversation without jumping straight to accusations.
