Embattled Mom Of Three Spanks, Slaps, And Puts Soap Into Her Kids' Mouths As Punishment. Do These Discipline Methods Work?

Date October 22, 2018

Thad and Jenniffer Bowersock were at their wit’s end. Their three kids – Maddie, aged 7, Hayden, aged 6, and Lily Grace, aged 4 – were getting totally out of control despite their best efforts to discipline them. So they turned to Supernanny Jo Frost for help.

Mom uses an appalling discipline method to teach her kid a lesson

In the video recorded before the program, kids seem to be at their worst behavior – screaming, talking back to their mom, and fighting with each other. What can a parent do about it?

Jenniffer responded to such behavior with what she thought works best – spanking and slapping. Viewing the video, Frost was in a shock.

What is she thinking?

she exclaimed.

When Frost arrived to meet the family, kids greeted her and acted nicely at first. But soon, all hell broke loose.

Kids started fighting and screaming and talking back to their mom, again. The mom finally snapped when Hayden splat – which is something she had repeatedly told him not to do – and applied the discipline method that many viewers and Supernanny herself found absolutely appalling. She put soap into the boy’s mouth.

It’s difficult to deal with such unruly kids, but here’s the question we need to ask: what caused them to behave like this in the first place?

How to discipline children without hurting them mentally and physically

Most parents still use physical punishment to discipline their kids. Some use it only as a last-resort measure, and some do it often. But here’s something child psychologists want every parent to know: physical punishment doesn’t work – it makes things worse.

Putting soap into a child's mouth deserves a special mention here. Not only is it ineffective in teaching the child how to behave, but it can also actually be dangerous! If a child accidentally ingests soap, it can cause a serious poisoning.

So, what discipline methods should you use instead? Here are a few tips on methods that really work:

  1. If your child misbehaves, don’t just tell them to “stop doing that.” Tell them what you expect of them instead; explain which behavior is right and why.
  2. If the child did something wrong accidentally and/or really didn’t know it was a “punishable offense”, don’t get mad. Calmly explain why it’s wrong and they shouldn’t do that in the future.
  3. If the child knowingly did something wrong, the punishment should be reasonable and proportionate to the misdeed. Two good examples of appropriate punishments are timeouts and withholding privileges (such as taking away electronics or leaving the child without a dessert.)
  4. If your child did something you had told them they would be punished for, follow through with the punishment every time. Empty threats undermine your authority as a parent. Children should know they will have to face consequences for their misbehavior to deter them from said misbehavior.

In addition to punishing bad behavior, it’s also important to acknowledge and reward good behavior. When praising your child or rewarding their good behavior in other ways, you should stress which particular behavior or deed is being rewarded, so your child continues to behave in this manner.

Parenting may be hard, but it’s also immensely rewarding if you do it right.
