Parents Are Furious After Doctor Performed An Unnecessary Surgery On Their Newborn By Mistake

Date June 1, 2018

Doctors’ mistakes are still one of the most controversial topics nowadays. Most procedures and surgeries are performed by humans. Diagnoses are made by them as well. As for organizational questions – also humans. If almost everything is controlled and performed by humans, there will be mistakes. However, the point is that a person’s attitude determines whether their mistake is forgivable or not.

Successful unnecessary surgery

The story we are about to tell you happened a while ago at University Medical Center in Lebanon, Tennessee, and is a great example of huge issues in the medical department. Jennifer Melton took her absolutely healthy newborn son, Nate, for a usual medical checkup. For some reason, the mother was not with her child during the routine checkup, so she didn’t know what was happening there. The mother was absolutely shocked when the nurse brought her baby a few hours later and told her about the “successful procedure” her son had undergone.

Doctor's mistake

Turned out a surgeon had clipped Nate’s tongue instead of the other child’s. The surgery called frenulectomy means removal of excessive tissue that connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth. Nate has never needed this kind of surgery. Therefore, it seems unbelievable that the qualified specialist still had to cut the healthy tongue.

The doctor admitted his mistake and wrote in a report:

I had asked for the wrong infant. I had likely performed the procedure on an infant different than the one I intended to, … and I admitted my mistake and apologized.

No one could predict if the boy would have any speech or eating problems. So Nate’s parents decided to sue the facility for the damage caused to their son’s health.

How to prevent mistakes and keep your child safe?

There are some key things we need to learn from this story:

  1. Make sure your doctors are fully informed about your child’s condition or medications.
  2. Always ask about every step your doctors do. You need to be informed about what’s going on. The rule is simple – be annoying.
  3. Learn more about how procedures are done. For example, how long does a regular checkup take?
  4. And the most important rule: don’t leave your child. For example, demand specific explanations why you cannot be present during your child’s checkup.

Although Nate’s story is not scary, dramatic, or disastrous, it is the true life story. The mistake could’ve been avoided if the doctor had been more attentive and careful. The same applies to the mother, who should’ve followed the simple rules, because these rules can help prevent far worse mistakes.
