When Kaleigh Snaith made the news for getting pregnant at the age of 13, there were those who thought this would have a negative impact on her life. But she proved them wrong.
They called her 'disgusting'
Kaleigh was understandably afraid and worried when she discovered she was pregnant at only13 years old. For the first six months, she hid it from her parents, Sharon and Tommy.
She eventually got the courage to tell them, and even though they were shocked, they also acknowledged that their daughter needed help to get through this difficult time. But for Kaleigh, the real challenge was to somehow balance being a mother and a student.
She revealed that one of the hardest things was being tired all the time. It did not help that her peers were far from supportive. In fact, they attacked her choices and concluded that being a mother so young meant none of her dreams would come true.
(They told) me I was disgusting, that I'd ruined my life, I'd never be a good mom and I'd never achieve anything in life.
Her parents, however, were of opposite opinion. They were determined to do everything they could to ensure Kaleigh could have a healthy baby safely and focus on school, as well.
Proving the haters wrong
The teenager gave birth to her baby girl and proved her bullies wrong by finishing school and bringing her daughter to the prom. The young mother explained that, instead of holding her back, her daughter Harley was actually the one that pushed her to "keep going" and work hard.
To celebrate how much she has achieved two years after her daughter was born, the young mom took the little one with her to celebrate her prom.
I hope by sharing the pictures from my prom, other young moms and their parents will realize that having a baby in your teens isn't the end of the world.
Even though Harley, who was two at the time, was not allowed to attend the prom, Kaleigh made sure her baby girl was all dressed up like a pretty princess for the occasion.
How parents can handle teenage pregnancy
Hearing your teenager is pregnant can be scary and overwhelming for any parent. But it's important to remember that this is a time your child needs you more than ever.
In an article published on PsychCentral, therapist and coach Drew Coster gave parents some tips on how to handle it if they discover their teenager is pregnant. He advised parents to maintain calm as much as possible and try to focus on finding out how their child is feeling.

Parents should show support at this time, and expect that due to the child's age, they may not always make the most mature decisions. Instead of using this as an excuse to attack, ensure you come from a place of understanding.
Things may change for both you and your child. However, the best thing you can do is accept it and work towards making sure the future is better for everyone involved.
