Dealing with cancer is emotionally draining, but it is just as financially crippling. This story will show you just how bad it can get, especially when it has progressed to stage four.

But then, what does stage four cancer mean, anyway?

Understanding the cancer stages

Stage four cancer is the most dangerous because it is when cancer has moved from its origins to other parts of the body. It is also called metastatic cancer.

Although cancer spreads, it is still identified by its original location. For example, if throat cancer spreads to the stomach, it will remain throat cancer.

She has stage four cancer but little money

Denise Bates is a 50-year-old resident of New Castle. A mother of five and grandmother of seven, she once used to be energetic but became a shadow of herself after she was re-diagnosed with cancer in January 2019.

She once battled ovarian cancer in 2015 and had gone into remission.

However, this time, it has spread to her colon, spleen, and liver, restricting her to the use of a wheelchair and the care of a palliative nurse.

One would think that this is the worst part of the story, but it is not.

After undergoing a mandatory reconsideration for Personal Independent Payment (PIP), she has been denied of benefits, under the claim that she does not qualify.

Therefore, the monthly payment of $386 (£310) which she used to get from PIP ceased sometime around May.

What this means for Granny is that she has to depend on the cheque of $429 (£344) that she gets per month as a caregiver to her son, who has learning disabilities.

Unfortunately, by the time all the bills are deducted, this terminally ill woman has to survive on a meager £24 monthly!

Completely distraught, her 28-year-old daughter Terri Bates criticized the assessment that led to her mother being cut off from the benefit,

"The questions were just like 'Can you make a cup of tea?' or 'How far can you walk?', stuff like that. There was nothing to do with her cancer or severe depression."

The family has launched an appeal, but in the meantime, well-wishers set up a GoFundMe account that has yielded a $3,526 (£2,825) donation so far.

How to help a cancer patient

It is unfortunate that there are so many like Denise Bates, who need help. Well, you can do something about it by:

  • Visiting
  • Giving gifts like CDs, pajamas, puzzles, music, magazines, etc.
  • Saying positive things and avoiding pretentious comments like, "I know how you feel."
  • Listening
  • Asking what they are feeling

Hopefully, the necessary help is raised for Denise to handle her health without having to worry about her finances. The government sure needs to do better for its citizens.
