Pregnancy is one of the most joyous events in a woman’s life, as she gets an opportunity to care and bond with the unborn child – an experience that is truly magical.

However, for others, pregnancy is tough and stressful, as it is a time filled with immense feelings of hopelessness, sadness, and anxiety. A woman who is experiencing these emotions might be suffering from depression – a condition that can put both the mother and their child at risk.

A pregnant woman with depression might not feel the urge to eat, care for themselves, and may find it hard to enjoy anything – factors that might affect the development of the fetus. Doctors recommend that women suffering from this condition should seek help through group therapies and even medication that can help to alleviate the harmful symptoms.

"I hated being pregnant"

For Jade North, a mother of two, pregnancy was tough, as she hated every minute she was pregnant with both of her kids. Jade, who is married to a loving husband, suffered from depression during both her pregnancies.

Jade hated how she gained weight, how she was always hot even when it was winter, how she could never find a comfortable position to sit in and how she extremely hated that she could not eat what she craved the most.

With the changes of pregnancy and the further adjustments in her own life, Jade felt like she was not herself. To her, the only relief she found is when she finally held her babies in her arms.

I hated being pregnant, it’s true. But I have never once hated being a mother.

The mother of two, a son and a daughter, only has good things to say after she gave birth, as she realized that despite the challenges of pregnancy, there is no greater joy for a woman like holding the baby in one’s arms.

To her, seeing her child after nine months was ‘a sweet payoff’ that she would not trade for anything else in this world.

Jade is not alone in her experiences

Depression during pregnancy affects many women. In a video posted by Trena Little, the pregnant woman shared her feelings on how terrible being pregnant was. Summing up her experiences in pregnancy, she said, "It is just terrible."

To Trena and other women who experience depression in pregnancy, most people do not understand why they are unhappy since everyone seems to expect pregnancy to be awesome.

Not everybody has this picture perfect pregnancy with this perfect belly, and happy…and looking… fantastic while they are pregnant.

For Trena, pregnancy is also filled with constant nausea and restlessness. When pregnant, one can never find anything to make them feel better, be it food, sleep, or comfort, as carrying a baby is as tiresome and mind-racking as it is rewarding.

Depression does not make you a bad mother

The experiences of these two women show the seriousness of depression for women, since, when they are pregnant, they find themselves not only battling the new changes in their lives, but also the judgment from others.

Truly, depression is a major problem that should be met with support and not ridicule since being a mom is tough. With social support like therapy and antidepressant medication for serious depression, pregnant mothers can find the joy that can only be experienced with a child in the oven.

So, did you experience depression when you were pregnant?
