Unbelievable! Boy That Weighed The Same As A Can Of Coke At His Birth Is The Smallest Baby To Survive In His Country

Date September 5, 2018 13:54

A boy who weighed just 350g, the same as a can of Coke, at his birth had been given poor chances to survive. But despite the sad forecast, he broke a record of the smallest baby born in the UK.

Defying all odds…

Katie Rhodes and Jay Taylor are the parents of the smallest baby boy born in the UK. Their son, Theo Taylor, weighed only 350g when he was born.

Katie’s pregnancy was absolutely normal until the 19th week. When the woman came to a hospital for a regular scan, her doctor said the fetus was smaller than expected. Theo just stopped growing in the womb.

Doctors told parents to expect the worse because in most cases, such tiny babies do not survive. The ‘ideal’ weight shouldn’t be below 500g, and Theo weighed only 350g.

But the little fighter did survive to defy all odds. Theo was born early at 26 weeks. His father recalled the emotional moment when he first saw his precious baby boy.

I had never ever seen a baby that small - I didn't know babies could be that small. The doctor said he was about the weight of a can of Coke, but even when I picked up a can, it felt heavier than Theo.

After his birth, Theo spent six months in the hospital under a supervision of the medical staff. The newborn couldn’t breathe on his own without a special equipment.

All this time, Katie and Jay didn’t lose hope that Theo was going to make it. Finally, after half a year, the happy parents could take him home. Doctors said they didn’t think little Theo would suffer any serious health issues in the future.

This little fighter managed to survive no matter what. We wish Theo and his parents all the best. They deserve to be happy after everything they had to go through.

Is low birth weight dangerous for the babies?

The chances of survival for a 400g baby is around 25%. Some babies are born totally healthy, but others may suffer from serious health problems, including eating disorders and fighting off infections. Their immune system may also be rather weak.

To reduce a risk of having a baby with a low weight, specialists recommend to future moms to take regular scans and avoid infections and other health conditions during pregnancy. Smoking, drinking alcohol, and using drugs are among the risk factors for having an underweighted baby.

Dear future moms, do not neglect regular checkups with your doctor to make sure there is no life threat to your precious child. Remember that your baby’s condition depends on your physical and mental health.
