Every day, at least 5 children die due to child abuse and neglect. Statistics show that among these children, 70% of them are aged 2 years and below, with boys being at higher risks of maltreatment compared to girls.
Maltreatment is a great danger to children since often times, they are powerless and fully dependent on their said ‘abusers'.
A mother left a 1-year-old barefoot, outside!
For Irena Ivic, an MCTS Driver, morning rides are always interesting but one morning, she found herself having to choose between completing a bus ride and doing something that only a mother would do. While driving on the freeway overpass on Milwaukee’s south side, Irena saw something that she never thought was possible; a 1-year-old boy was wandering alone and barefoot at 8 a.m. in the morning!
While the temperature was below freezing outside, the bus driver was shocked to see the baby as she noticed that he only had a onesie and a diaper on and even worse, he was crying. Taking matters into her own hands, she ran outside and carried the child back to the safety and warmth of the bus.
When they were back at the bus, Irena expressed her terror with the words,
I am shaking
as the passengers watched her in awe and disbelief at the child’s unfortunate situation. And after bundling up the child with a passenger’s coat to warm him up, he fell asleep in her arms as they waited for officers to arrive at the scene.
According to the police, the boy’s mother had left him outside, which might make it a serious case of child abuse and afterward, it was a relief when the child was reunited with his father. However, were it not for the bus driver and others who showed up for the kid, who knows what would have happened to the kid, especially in the busy traffic area?
How to prevent child abuse
Experts advise that it is important for both parents and primary caregivers to be proactive when dealing with their children since this is the only way to identify and avoid the forms of abuse they might face.

Some of the recommended actions include that:
- Parents should spend time and energy with their kids and volunteer to child care services.
- Discipline children in ways that encourage them to do the right thing, but with care.
- Monitor your own behavior since sometimes, you can harm kids with your beliefs, words, or actions.
- Educate yourself on care practices and also ensure that your kids are aware of their rights.
- Finally, always report cases of abuse since this is the only way to ensure that harm is minimized.
Just like Irena and other courageous people have shown, the solution to child abuse begins at the individual level and when you are responsive to individual cases and careful about your own, you will guarantee that kids are safer. Since our kids are the future, we need to tend to them with love, care, and attention so that they can grow up to make us proud.
