What are the causes of domestic violence?

First of all, it is important to understand that in most cases, the perpetrators of domestic abuse aren’t monsters. This brings us to the point that anyone has their reasons, which means they take full responsibility for their actions.

People have many different issues, and the desire for power and control is one of the most common ones in domestic violence. Moreover, both men and women can feel the need to exert dominance and total control over their partner. But what exactly causes domestic violence?

  1. One of the root causes of domestic violence is believed to be domestic violence in parents. Children learn the patterns of behavior by witnessing how the parents fight, how one partner abuses the other, and then, apply such patterns to their own behavior. Twenty years later, after witnessing domestic abuse in childhood, they repeat it. Such people are simply stuck in the vicious circle, and most likely do not understand that their behavior is not normal.
  2. Drugs and alcohol can also contribute to domestic violence. Often times, the perpetrators become abusive only under the influence of the substances, whereas when they are sober, they swear it will never happen again. Unfortunately, it rarely happens to be true.
  3. Stress is another common cause of domestic abuse. Some people cannot handle all the stress at work or basically in their lives. They can subconsciously find the person to blame for all their failures, dreams that never came true, and unbearable everyday stress and tension. This person often happens to be their partner, because it is much easier to shift blame and refuse to accept full responsibility.
  4. Though mental health issues are often caused by domestic violence, sometimes, they may force the person to become the perpetrator. Such behavior is rarely controllable and voluntary. This, however, doesn’t make it acceptable.
