We used to believe bad things cannot happen to us, as if we are shielded. But if you want a real protection for yourself or your loved ones, education is the key. This applies not only to different life-threatening diseases or other dangerous situations. Human trafficking is no exception to this. Unfortunately, even these days, human trafficking remains a huge problem and requires people to educate themselves on the matter to prevent it.

More than 21 million people become victims of this horrible injustice worldwide each year. Could you imagine? Luckily, we’ve got much lower rates in the US than in the countries like India and Libya, but that means nothing for nearly 50,000 people who have become victims of human trafficking in the last 10 years. And that is only the cases we know about. In order to prevent human trafficking, it is important to be aware of its types. Here, we are describing three main types of human trafficking, as well as some ways to report it.

Types of human trafficking

A hundred years ago, human trafficking was a huge business, which made some people millionaires by stealing the lives of millions of people. Today, however, it still makes huge profits. According to the International Labor Organization, human trafficking is a $150 billion global industry. And basically, this business is built upon three types of human trafficking: forced labor, sexual exploitation, and organ removal.

1. Forced labor

Human trafficking for labor exploitation usually occurs in developing countries. The victims are usually forced, coerced, or deceived by a job offer. Such people simply become slaves and are engaged in different labor-intensive jobs: agricultural work, construction work, domestic servitude, etc. Arguably the most horrible form, forced child labor, is widely spread in Africa and Asia.

2. Sexual exploitation

This type of human trafficking happens all over the world to mostly women and girls, regardless of the country. Sexual exploitation occurs when the victim is forced or coerced to participate in sex acts for commercial purposes. According to different studies, more than 1 million children are sexually exploited all over the world each year. Women are more likely to be forced into prostitution. Often times, victims are provided with false ID and are transported to other countries with the help of an organized network.

3. Organ removal

Organ removal, also known as organ harvesting, involves removing a part of the body (usually the liver, kidneys, lungs, etc.) to sell it on the black market. This type of human trafficking is rapidly growing and arguably the deadliest. Our aging population suffers from different incurable deceases, including diabetes, where organ transplantation is often the only thing that can save one’s life. That’s why organ harvesting is extremely widespread these days. However, it is important to mention a few things. The victims often develop lethal infections or even fail to survive the procedure. They may be even killed just to get their organs. Moreover, there are no guarantees that the organ transplantation helps the recipient, and often times it doesn’t.
