Sick Days Charity: Educators Donate Their Sick Days To Cancer-Stricken Teacher In Florida

Date August 23, 2018

No one is immune to cancer, it can happen to anyone. But sometimes, people forget to help those battling it. This history teacher had to beg for help on Facebook to be finally heard.

Robert’s story

Robert Goodman has been teaching history at Palm Beach Gardens Community High School for 23 years. However, colon cancer became the reason he had to take some time off for surgery and chemo. His vacation and sick days appeared to be far from enough to continue the treatment.

So, he wrote a sincere plea for help on Facebook, asking other educators to donate their sick days to him so that he could cover his treatment.

Educators community comes for help

The man clearly didn’t expect such a prompt response. In mere days, he got 75 additional sick days, instead of just 20 he asked for.

There was practically everyone who donated their sick days for him: teachers, staff members, and even lunchroom workers. All these people united to help the man in need. Here’s what Robert told CNN afterwards:

I couldn't believe it happened so fast.

Educators all over the country were reaching out to me to donate their sick days, even professors over at Florida Atlantic University. I felt guilty because I knew there were people who had it much worse than me.

Supportive comments

Of course, there were those who couldn’t donate their sick days to Robert, but they also wanted to do something. So they at least commented under his post, wishing the man well.

When people join together, they are a great force that can withstand everything! It’s been proved hundreds of times. So let’s just stay together and help each other. Who knows when you’ll need help.
