Considering how terrifying those numbers are, we always cherish kidnapping stories that end well for families. One of such cases is the Smart family, whose daughter Elizabeth survived the most horrifying thing that can happen to a child.

Elizabeth was kidnapped from her bedroom

On June 5, 2002, a strange man kidnapped 14-year-old Elizabeth, while her parents were sleeping in the next room. Only her 9-year-old sister Mary witnessed the abduction and was able to tell the police what happened.

That's when the nightmare for Elizabeth's parents, Ed and Lois, began. But nothing can be compared to the horror the kidnapped teenager had to live through.

Elizabeth was taken by Brian David Mitchell from her house in Salt Lake City to his home in Lakeside, California. He was assisted by his wife, Wanda Barzee, who helped him tie Elizabeth to the tree and drug her.

The girl was held captive for 9 months, over the course of which she was raped and humiliated every day. She had no hope of ever being rescued because she knew her kidnapper had no mercy.

Long-awaited rescue

But Mitchell wasn't smart. He made a mistake of going out with Elizabeth in public. Although she was difficult to recognize as he forced her to wear a veil, police recognized the seemingly homeless girl as missing Elizabeth Smart and questioned Mitchell.

Elizabeth revealed her identity and her abductor was quickly taken into custody. The girl's parents could hardly recognize, but upon realizing their daughter was finally found, they couldn't believe the nightmare was finally over.

She was able to get her life back

Despite the horror she had to go through, Elizabeth didn't lose herself and continued to live a full life. She became a published author and motivational speaker, helping other survivors of kidnapping.

Elizabeth also found happiness when she married her soulmate in 2012. The couple had a baby daughter in 2015.

Smart is grateful for being able to leave the terrible past behind and urges others to never lose hope. As she told People:

I feel so fortunate that I was able to come through this unscarred. I want to tell other people, ‘Don’t give up. Miracles do happen.’ I’m not sorry this happened to me anymore, because it made me grow up.

After all that happened, she deserves to be happy.
