Dementia is a collective name for progressive brain syndromes which affect memory, thinking, behavior and emotion. Dementia is the leading cause of disability and dependency among the elderly.

Although each person will experience dementia in their own way, eventually those affected are unable to care for themselves and need help with all aspects of daily life.
Ryan Giancola was on vacation with his family, neighbors and friends celebrating his birthday at the beach in Duck, N.C. on July 16 when an “elderly lady” came up to the group.

The woman asked if they could help fulfill her husband's wish to ride a wave one last time because it was “his favorite thing to do.”. She told them he is suffering from dementia and doesn't have much longer to live.
Yesterday an elderly lady came up to us at the beach and asked if we could help fulfill her husbands wish to ride a wave one last time. She said that he is suffering from dementia and most likely has a year to live. What and amazing experience and on my birthday none the less! pic.twitter.com/RW0rdhugK6— Ryan Giancola (@giancola_ryan) 17 июля 2019 г.
Giancola took to Twitter the next day to share a video, and post about his experience.
Ryan and his friends got the man onto a boogie board and safely helped him enjoy the surf.

The birthday boy also admitted that while the couple thought that he gave them a gift, they, in fact, gave the boy and his friends an incredible experience.
This move opened the door for many others to talk about their own experiences with people with dementia, and other illnesses.

This is actually, what we all should do. Helping and supporting people with dementia is extremely important as we can them to feel valued and included. Open your heart to the world and it will eventually reward you.
