For some, the acceptance is easier, as one can accept the loss of someone who might have been sick for a long time or an aging parent. However, when the death is abrupt, the acceptance of loss becomes harder and one might experience depression as they struggle to find meaning.

This elderly husband's final goodbye to his wife shows that even when the loss is painful, the final moments can be lovely, as it helps to give closure and peace.

Goodbyes can be lovely and peaceful

In a video posted by Terry North, the loving daughter shared a moving image of her 88-year-old father as he said goodbye to his wife of 64 years. The clip captures the father’s frail but brave attempt to bid his wife farewell, as he kisses her on the cheek to her delight.

The video, which was taken 3 days before the father passed away, shows that sometimes, the acceptance of loss can be easier when goodbyes are said since while there is sadness, there can be joy, too.

While North's mother was also aged and suffered from Alzheimer’s, when she was kissed by her husband, she mumbled, "oh I got it." To her, the goodbye kiss was lovely as it signified an acceptance that death is just the next stage in their lives that should be embraced.

Needless to say, the daughter’s courage to record and share the intimate and emotional final sendoff revealed her appreciation of the fact that loss is truly inevitable and that a proper goodbye makes everything better.

In saying goodbye, the most important thing is to ensure that both of you find peace, especially in the last moments. Some tips that can help you craft that message to say goodbye to your loved one are:

  1. Always say it all, always say it early. When saying goodbye, don’t wait till its too late as time is unpredictable. So, saying what’s on your chest earlier will help both of you to process and realize peace early.
  2. Accept that healing is sometimes, not possible. As you say goodbye, avoid raising the hopes of your loved one and accept that they might not get well. This will help you to find acceptance and not denial when they leave and for them, they can finally relax and find peace.
  3. Always show up. Most importantly, always be there for your loved one. Visit them, hold their hands, kiss them, talk to them, or just stay with them since actions always speak better than words.

In the end, whatever fights or competitions you had do not matter, and the most important thing is to say goodbye in a way that will create a fond and meaningful memory that you will always remember.
