To most of us, an Uber ride is just a means to reach our destinations but for Doug Anderson, a single trip transformed his daughter’s destiny forever.

It was just an ordinary day when Doug picked up a passenger and after striking a rapport with him, they had a lively conversation. As luck would have it, Doug’s chatty passenger was an engineering student who worked with 3D technology and after learning that his driver’s 11-year-old daughter was disabled, he offered to help.

A chance meeting transformed a young life forever

After their unexpected meeting on the Uber trip, both Michael Skinner and Doug realized that they were just in the right place, at the right time. While Doug was unable to help his daughter due to the high costs of prosthetics, Skinner worked with the e-Nable group that built prosthetics for little kids.

I kind of got the gears rolling in my head because I work with a group called e-NABLE and we build prosthetic hands for little kids.

Thus, after two months of working with Doug’s daughter, Tori who had been born with only one finger on each hand, Skinner and his team from the University of Notre Dame developed hands that could fit her. Using 3D technology and learning from sample models online, they successfully built replicas that changed the young girl’s life forever.

To Doug and his wife, e-Nable's intervention was a great fit for their wonderful child as the hands were not only a gift but an opportunity for their baby to do the things that her peers enjoy every day.

Tori no longer hides her hands

With the artificial hands that are still being improved by the team, Tori’s life changed for the best as she could enjoy play and do things she had always dreamt of doing on her own.

For instance, after the transformation, she stopped hiding her hands, rode her scooter better, and even got to play catch with her father.

To those who saw her story, the work by the students is applauded for its impact in changing the determined girl’s life.

Sharing on what he thought of the Uber ride that made all of this possible, Tori’s father uttered,

I think that God absolutely had his hand in this.

And truly, the little girl’s luck was magical and with her artificial hands, she can achieve all she sets her mind to.
