Back in 1956, famous American poet and novelist Jack Kerouac spent 2 months as a fire lookout at Desolation Park and wrote about his experiences in two books. Did they inspire Dabney Tompkins and Alan Colley to follow the author’s example?

We don’t know about these two particular novels, but it was surely a book that changed the couple’s life. Several years ago, the two stumbled upon a book about lookout cabins by the US Forest Service.

They had already relocated from Dallas to a smaller home in Portland. But Tompkins and Colley felt something was still missing. And they wanted to know more about the possibility of living in a fire lookout.

So the couple rented a few cabins at first. And then, they decided to purchase 160 acres of forestland and meadow in Oregon. Soon, with the help of a professional engineer and builder, their dream house was completed.

In the beginning, it was just a weekend house. But then, Tompkins and Colley quit their jobs and moved there. And although they thought it was going to be too boring and isolated, they absolutely enjoy it!

To reach the 388-square-feet, you need to walk 4 flights of stairs. Inside, you will find a simple kitchen and 2 narrow beds. There’s also a ladder leading to the top floor where the couple have their bedroom.

Yes, the cabin has no bathroom, but it’s not a problem. Instead of having it inside, Tompkins and Colley put the shower out on the deck.

How is it like to live there?

It’s definitely really quiet. As Colley says:

There’s no urban beat. You don’t hear sirens, you don’t hear traffic – you hear us. There’s nothing like that.

Although they live off the grid, this doesn’t stop them from eating good food. Instead of buying products at a grocery store, the couple have their own garden and buy things from local farmers.

And what they like the most is surely the picturesque scenery that they can enjoy each day of their lives.

Actually, everyone can have this experience. All you need to do is just to book a lookout online. But mind that, in the summer season, such houses are in high demand.
