Meet Stewart Roberts, A Volunteer Who Is Helping Homeless People By Giving Them Free Haircuts

Date July 13, 2018

Homelessness statistics

Even with all of the rapid progress and numerous innovations in all areas of life that have been made in the last few decades, poverty and homelessness still remain an issue. According to the Annual Homeless Report To Congress, 550,000 people are homeless in the US alone as of 2016. These are very high numbers. We ought to remember that these are people, with dreams, feelings, and aspirations. They have the same needs as everybody else.

Meet Stewart Roberts

Stewart Roberts, 56, knows about some of the issues that homeless people are facing firsthand. He had substance abuse and alcohol issues for 10 years of his life. After conquering his own addictions, he embarked on a journey to make a difference for other people. Being a professional hairdresser, Roberts decided to help the homeless look good by giving them free haircuts. Soon, other volunteers followed suit and Haircuts4Homeless was born. Now, there are more than 300 volunteers across the UK giving homeless people free haircuts. And just look at those fresh looks!

Causes of homelessness

Some people might think of homeless people as a separate population that have similar reasons of being homeless. However, this is not usually the case. In fact, there are many different factors that play a role in being homeless, and usually when somebody does end up in this category, it is due to a combination of a few of these factors.

Some of the most common causes of being homeless include:

  1. Lack of access to affordable housing and adequate employment and financial opportunities.

  2. Failure of social services and welfare systems that help support low income people.

  3. Personal factors such as family crisis, traumatic or catastrophic events, or addiction problems.

As you can see, there are many causes of being homeless. However, homeless people still want to preserve their dignity, and it's great that there are people like Mr. Roberts who volunteer their time and resources to help those in need.
