Chikungunya is a viral illness transmitted by mosquitos (like these little buggers weren't annoying enough already). Primary symptoms of the disease include a fever spike and substantial joint pain, as well as fatigue, rash, and headache.

The first case of chikungunya was recorded in 2013 in Africa, but since then spread to Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, the United States, and some parts of Canada and Mexico.
Symptoms and diagnosis
While chikungunya isn't lethal and the patient can feel better within a week, it's quite a nasty virus that can completely ruin a vacation or take a person out of their routine for a while.
The illness is especially uncomfortable due to the fact that joint pain is one of the primary symptoms that can persist up to a month after being infected.

Symptoms such as fever, joint and muscle pain, and fatigue can appear within 3-7 days after the bite. However, people who got infected with chikungunya will most likely develop resistance in the future.

How can you treat chikungunya?
There is no cure from chikungunya, but don't be alarmed. You can battle the illness just like you would a regular cold: get plenty of rest, drink lots of fluids, and take Tylenol or paracetamol to reduce fever.

However, do not self-diagnose. See a specialist and let your doctor know when and where you traveled in case you're experiencing any of the listed symptoms.
