Woman Noticed A Weird Symptom Of Breast Cancer And Started An Awareness Campaign To Warn Others

Date July 20, 2018

A weird and little-known symptom of breast cancer

What's the scariest thing about cancer? It's insidiousness. The lack of early noticeable and clearly perceptible symptoms is what makes the disease so deadly and so difficult to detect early. But sometimes, cancer shows its presence in subtle ways few people are aware of. This is why you always have to be on the lookout for weird sensations, changes in appearance, and other seemingly random signs or symptoms, as they may turn out to be the first signs of trouble.

Most women are aware that unusual breast lumps should be reported to and checked by a doctor, as they might be cancerous. But what about lesser-known symptoms of the disease, such as skin dimpling? One woman shared a photo of her breast to warn others about what breast cancer may look like, and her post soon sparkled something of an online awareness campaign.

Back in 2015, Lisa Royle was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. Fortunately, the diagnosis was made early enough for successful treatment. After the woman wrote the post (which was widely shared), she received the words of gratitude from many other women who inspected their breasts, found similar dimples, and got timely diagnoses, thanks to Lisa.

A year later, Claire Warner accidentally noticed a similar dimple on her own breast, which brought to mind the post she had seen a while back. The woman took to Facebook and wrote a similar post to spread awareness of this unusual symptom even further.

In 2017, a woman named Sherrie Rhodes had a similar experience and decided to share her story, too. Sherrie mentioned a post she had seen previously, which was the reason why her breast dimple set off alarm bells.

If you notice something like you see in the photos above on your own breast, have it checked by your doctor as soon as possible.

What are other symptoms of breast cancer?

Skin dimpling is a rather uncommon symptom of breast cancer. It often indicates a specific type of the disease (namely, inflammatory breast cancer), which represents about 1% to 5% of all breast cancer cases.

Other symptoms of breast cancer include the following:

  • a lump in the breast;
  • a lump in the armpit;
  • a change in size and shape of one breast;
  • breast or nipple pain;
  • nipple discharge;
  • nipple retraction;
  • red, irritated, itchy, thickened, and scaly skin around the nipple or anywhere on the breast.

If you have any of these symptoms or any other unusual changes in your breasts, schedule an appointment with your doctor. These symptoms may be caused by things other than cancer, but it’s important to have them checked anyway.
