If you are Morgan Freeman’s fan, then you most likely have noticed a single glove the actor sometimes wears on his left hand. Mr. Freeman was spotted wearing the glove at Screen Actors Guild Awards in 2018, and on multiple other occasions, but what is it for?
Back in 2008, Mr. Freeman got into a car accident which injured his left shoulder, arm, and hand. Doctors operated on the actor’s left hand for several hours, and the initial prognosis was good – he was expected to regain hand function in a few years.
However, 10 years on, the actor’s left hand is still paralyzed, and he has to wear a compression glove to stimulate circulation and prevent blood from pooling. The Going in Style star also suffers from fibromyalgia pain affecting his left arm.
Mr. Freeman takes the loss of function in his left hand in stride (he is left-handed, by the way). He had to give up some of his hobbies, but he didn’t quit acting. The actor said in an interview he gave to Esquire in 2012:
There is a point to changes like these. I have to move on to other things, to other conceptions of myself. I play golf. I still work. And I can be pretty happy just walking the land.
The unfortunate accident broke Morgan Freeman’s hand, but it didn’t break his spirit. The actor is 80, and it seems he isn’t going to retire any time soon. We hope to see many more movies with the man who made The Shawshank Redemption, Bruce Almighty, and other great movies possible.
