"That Makes My Heart Hurt": A Police Officer Broke Down In Tears During An Arrest After He Saw An Unbuckled 6-Year-Old In The Front Passenger Seat

Despite all PSAs, campaigns against drunk driving, and legal consequences DUI entails, the simple message – 'don’t drink and drive' – still can’t get through to many people.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, almost 29 people in the U.S. are killed in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes every day. In 2016, 10,497 people died in drunk-driving crashes. 1,233 of these people were children under 14 years old.

Well, if PSAs don't prevent drunk driving, maybe one news report can make people think long and hard.

The officer pulled the driver over and saw a little girl, unbuckled, in the front passenger seat. Then he asked the driver, Yvonne Ukestine, what she was thinking driving like that, to which she replied that she “was scared.”

When the woman got out of her car, she couldn’t speak clearly and was barely standing on her two, as she was blind drunk. She told the officer that the girl, her 6-year-old niece, was scared as if trying to tell him off for stopping her.

The officer replied:

Yeah, I'm sure she is. I'd be afraid, especially the way you were driving. I'd be afraid, too.

Officer Lafave arrested the woman. Then, he saw strollers in the trunk of her car. The moment when he broke down came when the 6-year-old girl tried to help him close the trunk.

He was speaking on the phone at the moment and couldn’t hold back tears. He told another officer in a trembling voice:

That makes my heart hurt.

Visibly shaken, he added:

God, it breaks my heart.

Subsequently, the woman agreed to a plea deal on the DWI charge. The charge of child abuse was dropped, KRQE-TV reported.

Officer Lafave had made more than his fair share of DWI arrests before that incident, but that one struck him so deeply because of the child. What could have happened to her had he not puller her aunt over? That’s something to think about, for all of us.
