Most species of spiders found in the United States aren’t dangerous. However, brown recluse spiders are not on this list. You’d better learn what they look like and stay away from them, as their bites may cause some pretty nasty symptoms! Meghan Linsey, “The Voice” finalist, learned firsthand what these spiders’ bites may lead to and shared her story.

“The Voice” singer got bitten

One February morning, Meghan woke up and felt an intense stinging pain under her left eye. She saw a spider next to her, and it turned out to be a brown recluse.

The stinging didn’t go away and the singer went to the ER, but doctors couldn’t tell her what would happen next, as everybody reacts differently to brown recluses’ bites.

Over the next few days, her symptoms got worse. Meghan developed a skin rash, a welt on her throat, and a shooting pain in her face and shoulder blades. About a week later, the site of the bite started getting dark, the singer recalled when she appeared on The Doctors.

Her doctors confirmed it was necrosis. Meghan was immediately put into a hyperbaric chamber and later underwent several more hyperbaric oxygen treatments, and her face started getting better.

Meghan admits it was a scary experience, but she says it changed her for the better. She wrote on Instagram:

I wouldn’t wish this experience on my worst enemy, but I would never take it back for myself for anything. I had to go through it and I’m a better more patient, loving person for it. I found true inner peace and learned how to love myself through the process. Invaluable lessons.

What are the symptoms of a brown recluse spider’s bite and how it’s treated?

If you get bitten by a brown recluse, it’s possible not to notice or feel anything at first. Some people feel stinging in the moment of the bite.

According to WebMD, the following signs and symptoms may appear within a day or two after the bite:

  • pain or redness at the site of the bite;
  • a sore or ulcer at the site of the bite;
  • fever;
  • chills;
  • nausea;
  • joint pain;
  • weakness.

In very rare cases, a bite may cause neurological symptoms, such as seizures.

If symptoms are mild, the bite may be treated at home. Try the following:

  1. Clean the bite with soap and water.
  2. Apply antibiotic cream.
  3. If the bite is on your arm or leg, keep the limb elevated to reduce swelling.
  4. Apply ice on the bite.

Seek medical help immediately if you have more serious symptoms, such as the following:

  • an ulcer or blister with a dark center at the site of the bite;
  • extreme pain;
  • difficulty breathing;
  • signs of infection, such as redness, warmth, swelling, and pus.

If a child gets bitten by a brown recluse, seek medical help right away even if there are no symptoms.

Remember, brown recluse spiders are not to mess with!
