Makeup wipes made the nightmare come true

Alyssa Potts used Neutrogena makeup wipes and developed a horrible allergic reaction, despite the fact that she had been using them for months. The only difference is that the reaction occurred because of the new pack. The mother decided to post this information online, so it doesn’t happen to anybody else. Let’s see what exactly these wipes contain, and is this allergic reaction a typical scenario?

Official formula

According to the official site, Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes contain the following ingredients:

Water, Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, Isostearyl Palmitate, Pentaerythrityl Tetraethylhexanoate, Isononyl Isononanoate, Cyclopentasiloxane, Hexylene Glycol, PEG-4 Laurate, PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides, Sucrose Cocoate, Carbomer, Sodium Hydroxide, Benzoic Acid, Dehydroacetic Acid, Phenoxyethanol, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Fragrance (EU 1279).

The company also mentions that:

While Neutrogena® strives to keep ingredient lists on this website as accurate as possible, we cannot guarantee that these lists are complete, reliable, up-to-date, and error-free.

This basically means that the company can add some new ingredient (it is highly unlikely to be anyhow useful or healthy). The uninformed customers may think they’re buying the same product, while it actually would have the modified formula. This can result in consequences like in case of Alyssa Potts.

And indeed, the customer feedback is overwhelmed with negative reviews, mainly, because of the new formula. People are angry and upset, as many of them are having rashes, pain, irritation, cystic acne, etc.

The analysis of components

Most of the ingredients in the formula are safe with individual cases of allergic reactions. However, there are certain exceptions.

  1. Cyclopentasiloxane is not recommended to use in case you have bronchial asthma, exacerbation of any allergies, and if you are prone to uveitis (eye inflammation). Inhalation of cyclopentasiloxane particles, especially if using sprays, can irritate the mucous membranes of the eyes and respiratory tract.
  2. PEG-4 Laurate is a known human skin toxicant and allergen. Although the chemical is determined safe for use in cosmetics, it can definitely become a cause of allergic reactions.
  3. Sodium hydroxide (caustic soda, soda lye, lye, white caustic, sodium hydrate, fotofoil etchant, NAOH, STCC 4935235, sodium hydroxide pellets) is considered as a highly toxic chemical. It is very corrosive and can cause severe burn. Moreover, it can cause permanent eye damage. Sodium hydroxide affects via skin contact or inhalation of dust. Also, the chemical is extremely dangerous if ingested.
  4. Phenoxyethanol is a preservative which is determined as safe in a concentration lower than 1%. The chemical can cause allergic reactions.
  5. Iodopropynyl butylcarbamate is also used as a preservative in cosmetics. The chemical is very toxic by inhalation. It can cause significant immune or allergic reactions. This chemical is restricted in Japan.
