Forever Young: Betty White's Animal Friends May Be The Secret Behind Her Endless Youth

Betty White has graced television screens in America for more decades that the average Hollywood A-lister but still looks as fabulous now as she did at the start of her career. The “Golden Girls” star’s age-defying looks have many wondering what her secret is.

One hypothesis some people have is that her love for animals may be the secret behind her youth. For the past 40 years, she has been a trustee with the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association. She is passionate about helping animals and educating people on the need to protect endangered species.

In an interview with Smithsonian, White revealed that her passion for animals started from a young age. Her parents were animal lovers and they instilled it in her that she held on to, despite choosing acting as a career.

White has been working with the Morris Animal Foundation since the '70s is very passionate about ensuring animals live long and healthy lives. She also has pets of her own and her dog is a big part of her life.

You guessed it, her dog helps

Some people have issues working out without a trainer but for White, having an active dog around is all the motivation she needs to stay in shape.

Chasing a frisky dog is no easy feat, she knows. She spoke about her beloved dog an how it provides her enough activity in a 2009 interview.

I play with my Golden Retriever for physical exercise. And I do crossword puzzles for mental exercise. I’ll tell you how hooked in I am to crossword puzzles, I’m so hooked that when I puppy train a dog, and put papers down, when I see a crossword puzzle I grab it so the dog doesn’t tinkle on it.

White turned 96 this year and has no plans to retire from animal activism. Her 2012 book "Betty & Friends: My Life at the Zoo"  was ample proof that the love she has for animals is very strong. She even once described herself as a “lifelong card-carrying zoo groupie.”

Many actors her age have retired but White does not have any plans to quit acting just yet. For her, staying on the job guarantees she continues to make enough money to support her passion and her crusade for animal care. You go, Betty White!
