Preparing a young contestant can be very heavy on the pocket of parents. Participants pay for their own entrance fee, wardrobe expenses, professional coaching charges, photography costs, hair styling, and makeup costs. The total investment can pile up to a bill of $8000 or more. There is no guarantee of any return if your child doesn't win.

Living off a scarce budget

A 27-year-old mother from Derby, Portia Richmond has been compelled to cut back on indulgences of her family. She wants to be able to afford her 3-year-old daughter, Amelia’s beauty pageant hobby. The woman has managed to reduce her food bill by $39 a week.

Portia buys eatables in bulk, cooks in large batches and freezes every pint of an extra meal. Over the years, she’s splashed out more than $7000 on Amelia's luxurious outfits, spray tans and cosmetics.

The mum compares her toddler's obsession with any other sport, such as dance or gymnastics. All hobbies can justify Portia's limited spendings and efforts. She personally choreographs her daughter's modeling routine too.

How to promote a healthy body image?

Peer pressure to mold into strict appearance standards can be torturous to a child. According to CBC, such children need to mend their perception of beauty. Parents should open dialogue and restrict exposure to the measure of perfection found on the internet.
