Forcing students to wear uniforms at all is a controversial topic on its own. Those who are against it believe that it can hinder the students from showing their true personalities which may affect how much they embrace who they are.

One school, however, decided to take things further by dictating that not only must the students wear uniforms, but girls were also weren't allowed to wear skirts.

A heated debate

Priory School in Lewes, Sussex, came under some heat recently when they tried to enforce a "no skirts" policy for its female students.

The school defended their decisions by saying that they wanted to create a gender-neutral environment and as a result, skirts weren't a part of the uniform anymore.

Due to this update, over 150 parents and students staged protests by wearing skirts and the Sussex Police had to intervene and stopped those who flouted the rules from entering the school premises.

Two students from the school were on ITV's Good Morning Britain where they spoke with Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid about the inconvenience of the uniform rules.

Piers stated that he felt it was unfair to the girls to have to make such a change in order for the school to accommodate a few students. He also added:

I don't think it's fair on families, having to fork out now, for an entirely different uniform... It's ridiculous.

While co-host Susanna Reid agreed that students don't usually get a lot of choices when it comes to school uniforms, it did seem like the girls were the ones being majorly affected by the rule change.

I think it's tough on the girls if they're the ones that have to bear the brunt of the change.

A different option

Chitra Ramaswamy, in an article for The Guardian, insisted that introducing gender-neutral policies shouldn't come with narrowing the choices for some people.

All students, both male and female, should simply be allowed to wear whatever makes them comfortable as this is the best way to promote a truly inclusive environment.

Where do you stand on the ban on skirts in some schools?
