According to a report made by the American Academy of Pediatrics, smacking children is not a great idea. Kids who had been hit by their parents are more likely to develop mental disorders and aggressive behavior.

However, many parents have different opinions on the subject. It even created a heated debate on This Morning recently.

To smack or not to smack

This Morning hosts along with their viewers have clashed over whether parents should smack their children or not. Broadcaster Rebecca Wilcox claimed that physically disciplining children is harmful as she knows this from her own experience.

The journalist explained that she once hit her 4-year-old son after he spilled water on her laptop and still feels guilty about it. She said:

My biggest guilt as a mum is smacking my four-year-old, and it was all about my loss of control. I'm the adult I should know better. What did I do?

Wilcox added that she will never get over seeing the fear in her son’s eyes, calling herself ‘the biggest hypocrite’ and noting that the relationship with her child has changed ever since.

However, Claire Muldoon, a journalist from Scotland where smacking children is now banned, argued that 'every loving parent' would not shy away from physical punishment.

But how can we discipline our children when they behave badly? Some suggest using negative consequences, like losing TV time for not cleaning the room, or punishing kids by taking them away from interesting activities.

It’s important for a child’s development to grow in a warm and loving environment which means that parents should learn how to manage their feelings.
