There are different opinions when it comes to who should foot the bill for a couple's wedding. Some subscribe to the traditional belief that it's the wife's family's job to pay the bills while others conclude that it should be the groom's responsibility.

Then there are those who believe that it's up to the bride and groom to come up with funds for the wedding since it's technically their celebration.

Upset with MIL

A bride, however, ignited disapproval from internet users after she said that she expected her widowed mother-in-law to contribute more to their wedding.

In a post which was shared on Reddit, the bride sought advice because her soon-to-be mother-in-law was reluctant to make a contribution to the upcoming wedding. She said that after a family meeting, everyone agreed to contribute $5000 but a little while later, MIL said that she couldn't afford it.

According to the full post obtained by the UK Sun, the bride was upset because she knew for a fact that MIL got social security from her late ex-husband and also collected rent from a property she owned.

The bride was very angry at her groom's mother for claiming she couldn't pitch in when she had several streams of income including retirement money and paychecks from her daughter.

The bride insisted that her mother-in-law-to-be needed to be upfront with her income so they could know for sure how much she earned but her husband-to-be was not going for it.

She asked internet users if they could advise her on what to do as she and her fiance were arguing a lot over this issue.

Reactions

Many people who commented on the post on Reddit concluded that the bride was feeling much too entitled and it wasn't up to her MIL to pay for her wedding.

@Kintuon advised:

If you can’t afford your own wedding. You shouldn’t get married. If your parents want to help then that’s great but they aren’t the ones getting married so they shouldn’t be obligated to pay.

@anniepotpie:

This entitlement culture is something I can't stand. Even if I had tons of money (SSI and rent is not) I wouldn't give this chick a dime.

@M3phi5t0-:

If you want to get married, then you pay for your own wedding. Don't expect others to pay for it for you.

@morecoffeepleeease:

When you decide to get married, it's your problem. If people can and want to help you out with it, that's awesome, but absolutely no one is ever obligated to chip in for your wedding. Gross. Adjust your plans to fit what you can afford.

People seemed to agree that the bride was asking for too much by being curious about her mother-in-law's earnings just because she couldn't contribute to the wedding.

It does appear that this lady is being a little unreasonable and perhaps, she should consider planning a wedding she can afford since this is causing so much anxiety. Do you agree?
