Do you have a tattoo? Well, even if you don't have a tattoo, then you probably know someone who has one on their arm, leg, chest, or for the very bold few, the face.

But what do these tattoos mean? In past civilizations, such as China and Greece, they were aspects of culture and tradition, as people painted their gods on them for blessings and protection.

Today, while the cultural and traditional foundations of tattoos have been more or less erased, more people are getting tattoos for various reasons. In 2017, this couple from Melbourne made headlines when they were named the world's 'most tattooed senior couple', and they are very proud of it.

Meet the world’s most tattooed couple

Charlotte Guttenberg and Chuck Helmke are currently the 'most tattooed senior citizens' according to the Guinness World Records, as they have 97.5% of their bodies covered in magnificent artwork. The eccentric couple from Melbourne, Florida, is a sight to behold, as their colorful tattoos tell a beautiful story of love, fearlessness, and identity.

However, Chuck and Charlotte, who are now the most tattooed citizens male and female in the world, did not always have tattoos. For Charlotte, tattoos never really crossed her mind until she reached her 50th birthday and decided to get her first tattoo.

Tattoos are a form of expression

The couple that has spent approximately 2000 hours in the tattoo shop to achieve their enormous fete have received adoration from the society, as people are always stopping them in public to pose for photos and selfies.

However, often than not, they also receive negative backhanded comments from other people who don’t understand them. In an interview with the Guinness Book, Charlotte said that she never cares for what people think of her, as they are a form of expression, one that she adores.

Having the tattoos has given us the ability to show everybody that you can be different, you can express yourself, and it does not matter how you do it

For the couple, the magnificent tattoos are more than beautiful designs, as they have helped them to express their identities and celebrate their uniqueness.

Are tattoos an addiction or a habit?

People get tattoos for different reasons, and one question that always lingers is whether tattoos are a habit or an addiction.

Some psychologists believe that tattoos are an addiction, as they are used to fulfill the endless human need for acceptance, self-esteem, and recognition. After a person adds a tattoo, they experience a breathtaking form of excitement and the rush is only quenched with more tattoos.

To others, however, tattoos are just a habit, as they showcase our core desires and beliefs. For some, tattoos are pieces of art that celebrate fandoms and express sentimentality. For those who wear them, the bodily decorations capture momentous moments in life.

While the reasons for tattooing differ, it is evident that they are central to our culture. And for most people, they are something they cannot live without. So next time you see someone with a tattoo, try not to see them as mere decorations, but as a part of their unique identity.
