Hygiene Brand "Always" Removes Feminine Symbols From Packaging As A Nod To Transgender And Gender-Neutral Customers

Always, a brand of feminine hygiene products, has been forced to scrub the female Venus symbol off their packaging. The move comes partly in response to calls and concerns by some transgender advocates and trans people who have been pointing out that non-binary and transgender people use menstruation products, too.

Gendered hygiene products humiliate non-binary and transgender people

Trans activists Ben Saunders and Melly Bloom tweeted Always in July to ask why the female symbols were necessary.

“Could someone from Always tell me why it is imperative to have the female symbol on their sanitary products?”

- Bloom wrote.

“There are non-binary and trans folks who still need to use your products too you know!”

Several trans men and non-binary people have spoken of the gender dysphoria they feel when having to use sanitary towels with advertising and packaging that is stereotypically ‘female’.

Gender-neutral periods products

And you know what? Bloom got a letter from Always.

“We listened to you and our marketing team worked a solution,”

- the letter said.

“We are glad to inform you that as of December we will use a wrapper design without the feminine symbol.”

“We routinely assess our products, packaging and designs, taking into account consumer feedback, to ensure we are meeting the needs of everyone who uses our products.

- Proctor & Gamble's media relations team told NBC News in an email Monday.

Although the company seems to be very tolerant to its customers, "Always" isn't the first brand who uses gender-neutral approach to period products.

For instance, there are at least 7 other companies, including Thinx, Pyramid 7, Aunt Flow, Piinde, Lily Pads, GladRags etc. whose products are accessible for all people to use on both physical and emotional levels.

Well, the truth is that not everyone who has a period identifies as female so it's a great move that sends a message to transgender and non-binary people who need these products that their identities are embraced and supported!
