Continuously brushing your hair with a dirty hairbrush is not a smart move.

Dermatology surgeon Sejal Shah explained to Good Housekeeping that the buildup of dust mites, dead skin cells, and other invisible germs on your hairbrush can serve as a breeding ground for bacteria and yeast overgrowth. This puts you at risk of getting an infection.

The good news is that there are simple and quick ways to get gunks off your hairbrush. We have two methods to share with you today and either of these processes will only take about five minutes tops.

How to clean a hairbrush - Method 1

For the first process, all you'll need are a pen, scissors, toothbrush, warm water, and some shampoo.

First, run the pen through the gaps between the brush to push out the hair and other dirt that have congealed there. Use a pair of scissors to cut through the hair you've pushed out which makes it easy to remove the excess hair from the brush.

Next, dip your toothbrush in the mixture of the warm water and shampoo then used that to scrub out your hairbrush. Make sure you reach all the nooks and crannies. Then dry out the hairbrush and you're good to go.

How to clean a hairbrush - Method 2

For this method, start by putting your brush under running water so the hair in there combines with the gunk building up in the bristles.

The next step is to pull out the hair from the brush. Then using a toothbrush, thoroughly scrub out the rest of the dirt while the hairbrush is still under running water.

When you're done, simply leave it out to dry or use a dry paper towel to clean all the wetness for immediate use.

As you can see, these methods aren't difficult at all. You don't need a fancy cleaner or special solution to get rid of dirt on your hairbrush. In general, a small toothbrush, water and possibly some shampoo can help you deal with this problem quickly.
