A congenital melanocytic naevus (or nevi) is simply a medical term for a mole that you’re born with. They’re a very common type of birthmark. Baby naevus can range in size from the small, common ones the size of a pinhead, up to large, rare forms that cover much of the body surface.

Giant nevi are relatively rare, occurring in roughly 1 out of 20,000 live births.

The truth is that in most cases, congenital nevi don’t cause any physical problems and don’t require treatment. However, they can make some people self-conscious and cause different unpleasant situations.

One real-world example is the story of a baby-girl from Russia, who was born with a giant birthmark that covered 80 per cent of the child's body.

Baby with a birthmark

Maria Khvostantseva, 22 revealed that a local priest refused to baptize her one-month-old daughter because of the tot’s large birthmark.

When the mother took her newborn to a church in the city of Kurgan, the priest told her he would not allow baby Vika to participate in the group baptism.

The priest explained that he did not know if the birthmark was contagious or how other parents would react.

Ms Khvostantseva told local media:

‘The priest did not want to touch Vika. He said, ”The spot can be contagious and I think our congregation won’t understand this”.’

Moreover, the priest reportedly offered to baptize the girl individually but said he would charge 4,000 RUB (63 USD) for the privilege.

The upset mother wrote on social media:

“I don’t think it should cost that much to baptise a child. For now, we decided to postpone it.”

.Spokesperson for Kurgan Metropolis, Mikhail Nasonov, said that this type of behavior is unacceptable for a priest.

The baby Vika was diagnosed with large congenital melanocytic nevi. The condition is dangerous as there is an increased risk for it to develop into melanoma, a serious type of skin cancer.
