Grandmother Who Once Texted The Wrong Teen Spends Fourth Thanksgiving With Him

Date November 29, 2019

Jamal Hinton has the best thanksgivings ever. Why? Because he got to learn what the holiday is truly about in the sweetest way possible.

In 2016, he received a text invite from the unknown member. He got very confused at first and then thought that his grandma had finally learned how to use a phone. But as it turned out, the woman, who send the text, Wanda Dench, was a complete stranger.

The 17-year-old jokingly responded:

you not my grandma. Can I still get a plate tho?

Dench happily invited the teen and his entire family for the Thanksgiving dinner and it was the beginning of the sweetest cross-generation friendship.

Wanda Dench and Jamal Hinton still celebrate Thanksgiving together

It’s been 4 years since Jamal Hinton received a text invite from Wanda Dench but the unlikely pair still continue to meet up for Thanksgiving dinner.

Hinton recalls why he decided to go to a stranger’s house for a holiday meal:

What made me want to go was that I went and actually met her and she was pretty nice. So I decided that I’d just go and enjoy the time with her. It turned out to be a great thing.

Since then, the young man has spent every subsequent Thanksgiving at his “other grandma’s” home, who turned out to be a great cook, just like every grandmother in the world.

Hinton says he and Dench have become very good friends and see each other ‘about every two months’, even though they live in Arizona towns miles apart.

The now-20-year-old feels incredibly grateful for Dench's accidental dinner invite. Who would have thought that a simple phone number mix-up could turn into a warm and long-lasting connection?
