Over The Top! Anti-Vaxx Grandma Refuses To Get Shots Before Meeting Her Prematurely-Born Grandchild

Parents and grandparents have been at war of opinions since the beginning of time. Belonging to different eras gives them separate perspectives. Mostly this issue can be resolved if grandma/grandpa withdraws his/her policies and be flexible.

The well-being of your child is always at stake when the grandparents are strict anti-vaxxers.

In American, the cases of whooping cough and tetanus have become rare. But, to make sure the numbers remain low, vaccinations are available. Babies cannot receive a shot within the first 2-months. So, the precautions fall on the shoulders of the child's caretaker or anyone in contact.

No vaccination around newborn

A devastated man on Reddit narrated a complicated situation and asked the users if he's overreacting. His daughter was delivered prematurely and was kept under observation in the Newborn ICU. Doctors told his wife and his family to get vaccinated in order to see the vulnerable baby.

Everyone followed the instruction except the man's anti-vax mother-in-law. She thinks that her son-in-law is keeping her away from her granddaughter on purpose.

The new dad is completely torn as the mother-in-law's allegations are completely untrue. He and his wife simply want their daughter to be safe and healthy and nothing will come between that. The man explained:

She [mother-in-law] is currently calling us every name under the sun and playing the victim. It's pretty pathetic.

People think there should be no compromise on the child's safety

@WheresMyBlanket_:

Well, being a grandma is a privilege not a right. And your child has a right to live and be healthy so...tell granny to go spend time in the corner and maybe take a nap! She sounds like she behaving worst than your newborn

@LJ161:

Each time she tries to act the victim let her know that this is her choise and her decision not to see her grandchild, everyone else took the necessary steps to ensure the safety of your new child so they get to see the baby. She didnt so she wont.

@Salter90:

Not over reacting at all! I received the same response from my MIL i gave plenty of notice and told her if i wasn't sent proof of vaccination 2 weeks before my due date "takes 2 weeks for the vaccines to be effective " that she cant meet my son until 2 weeks after his 6 week vaccinations. 3 months she carried on until she realised we weren't budging. She got her vaccinations last minute and sent me through the drs letter as proof of vaccination. Hold your ground and dont give in. You cant force her to get her vaccinations but she cant expect you to put your daughters life and health at risk either. You have set the boundary its now up to her

@SCSWitch:

Definitely not overreacting. Babies in general are vulnerable to infections, and premies are even more vulnerable. Protecting your child is the right thing to do.

@RainyDayRose:

I'm an expecting grandma (and hopefully a nice MIL). One of the first things I did when I learned my daughter was pregnant was to get my TDAP, then I let the rest of the family know they needed to do the same.

As the commentators suggested, it was the grandmother's decision to follow her ego and not see the granddaughter. Parents shouldn't feel guilty about protecting their newborn girl. Share this and let us know if you agree?
