Everyone farts, every single day. So don’t you dare deny it.

According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), passing gas about 13 to 21 times a day is normal.

Yet, some people produce more gas than others. And for those people, there are a few common excessive gas causes to know about.

Causes Of Farting

Eat and Drink Fast

When you eat or drink fast, you can swallow a lot of air, which can cause gas. The air irritates the stomach and provokes nervous impulses that make spasms in the digestive tract. It results in indigestion, so food begins to ferment and gas production increases.

Habits Like Smoking Or Chewing Gum

Smoking, chewing gum, and drinking through a straw may cause your stomach to fill with air, leading to gas.

Foods That Contain Fiber

When you eat a lot of beans, cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, or bran it seems that nothing can be better and healthier. Yet, there is a side effect of it!

You fart more because the stomach and small intestine can’t absorb some of the carbohydrates sugars, starches, and fiber.

Drinking Milk Gives You “Issues”

So does eating other types of dairy like yogurt and cheese. Blame a little enzyme called lactase as it causes farting!

Carbonated Beverages And Drinks Containing High Fructose Syrup

These products just add more gas or feed the bacteria in your digestive tract.

Besides, sugar leads to excessive growth of pathogenic microorganisms in the colon that leads to excessive farting.

Yet, excessive or smelly farts can be caused by medical conditions such as

  • diabetes,
  • scleroderma,
  • thyroid dysfunction,
  • colon bacterial overgrowth,
  • irritable bowel syndrome,
  • diverticulosis

Holding a fart in can result in pain in your abdomen, gastrointestinal diseases, failure of intestinal walls or more stinkier smell.

At the end of the day, gas is a normal part of life and you can’t stop farting completely, but if you want to reduce the amount of gas in your system just try to avoid the causes we listed above!

Make an appointment with your doctor if your symptoms suddenly become severe.
