If you have old jeans, here is what you can do with them.

Why is it important to wash first?

Did you know that in many cases, rashes, itches, and other allergic reactions on your skin can be caused by chemicals that are used to create a wrinkle-free look of the clothes in shops? Unfortunately, the manufacturers are not obligated to specify the chemicals they are using on labels.

Professor Donald Belsito, a dermatologist, claims that the new clothes should be run through the washing machine at least once as soon as you get home. The fabric can contain bugs and insects from people who have tried items on at the store aside from chemicals. He also added:

I have seen cases of lice that were possibly transmitted from trying on in the store, and there are certain infectious diseases that can be passed on through clothing. The other infestation I’ve seen from clothing is scabies.

Formaldehyde

Tirumalai Kamala, an immunologist, Ph.D. Mycobacteriology, also agrees on the matter and suggests to wash the new clothes before wearing them. From the safety point of view, the most dangerous chemical is Formaldehyde, which is used to embalm bodies and is a known human carcinogen.

Although the levels of formaldehyde are considered as safe, at least in the US, according to studies, it can still cause allergic contact dermatitis and irritant contact dermatitis.

Personal hygiene

As a matter of fact, you might feel like the item is clean because it looks clean. However, think of 30 different people, which might have some skin diseases or simply are dirty, trying it on before you. Well, wearing that T-shirt you have bought in your favorite shop before washing it doesn’t seem to be great idea anymore, does it?

Symptoms of clothing allergy

There are many symptoms that can be caused by clothing allergy. Don’t hesitate and always consult with a specialist if you’ve discovered one or several of these:

  • runny and/or itchy nose;
  • watery eyes;
  • skin redness or rash;
  • swollen areas of skin;
  • itchy skin;
  • moderate to severe skin acne.
