One mom wasn't about to look the other way when she felt like her daughter was being asked to uphold an unfair dress code.

Dress-code system and victim-blaming

Girlhood expert Shauna Pomerantz of Brock University, while speaking to Neatoday, said that even though school dress codes are often directed to both boys and girls, there are certain rules that seem focused on the females.

An example is a dress code which uses gendered language like, "girls must not wear spaghetti straps or show cleavage." Evidently, the purpose of rules like this is to ensure the girls do not distract other students, male especially, with their outfit. And Pomerantz believed that this reasoning is a form of victim-blaming.

It’s saying the male response is your fault. Your body is causing negativity.

The expert claimed that these rules are sexist and offensive to both male and female.

A mother's payback

A Florida mom recently faced a drawback of such rules when her nine-year-old daughter was asked to cover up by her school because her tank top "distracts" boys.

Rather than complain about the dress code, however, the mom went a different way. In an interview with Yahoo Lifestyle, Kate Darrow said that her daughter was asked to wear a hoodie over her tank top so as not to make the male students uncomfortable.

A few days later, Kate passed across a message to the school by having her daughter wear a T-shirt which had the words 'Right to bare shoulders' on it. Her older son and two other students wore shirts that read "Real men aren't distracted by shoulders."

Kate said that they wanted to stage a form of "peaceful protest" and it seemed to have worked. The next day, the school administrators met with Kate and her husband Rob and they promised to investigate what happened.

The mom said her family hoped the dress code would be changed as it sent the wrong message that girls are responsible for whatever a boy does.
