It is not uncommon these days to hear both professional and self-anointed philosophers proclaim lofty dictums that a fruitful and fulfilled life is only a collection of memories.

How dementia influences people

Many of us would concur with this judgment. It is the memories not material stuff that matter in the end. Unfortunately, however, nobody is immune to memory loss or dementia.

Furthermore, it is understood that dementia also entails such symptoms as impaired reasoning and communication, attenuated ability to focus and concentrate, problems with visual perception.

Because dementia is most often progressive in nature, people suffering from it manifest these symptoms to a greater extent over time.

Man re-married his wife of 18 years

This is exactly what happened to Bill Duncan, 71, from Aberdeen. Diagnosed with dementia for the first time in 2011, the man’s condition has consistently worsened since that time.

By 2018, he had forgotten much of his life and could not even remember his wife of 18 years, Anne.

Convinced that Anne was his new belle, Bill decided to marry her and ultimately popped the question. Although Anne initially thought that Bill would forget about his romantic overtures, she eventually had to succumb to his wooing.

She even bought a new dress for their emotional wedding ceremony. And so they remarried.

Never asking unnecessary questions or impugning the rationale of the couple, Bill and Anne’s friends and family attended the ceremony.

What Bill and Anne’s story teaches us is that demented people require a very specific kind of support.

Apparently, Anne took such a good care of Bill that he fell in love with her again.

Taking care of dementia sufferer

Make no mistake, dementia made Bill forget his wife, but Anne won the battle by extending so much love, support and attention to Bill that he became enamored with her one more time.

This is exactly the reason why demented people require not only technical medical assistance but also genuine support from the loved ones.
