In July 2012, he was approached by a same-sex couple, Charlie Craig and Dave Mullins, who requested to design a wedding cake. Phillips, who is a Christian, is reported to have politely declined but offered to design cakes for any other occasion for the couple.

Soon after, the Phillips began receiving threatening calls from random people questioning his decision to not make a cake for the same-sex couples.

There were days when my wife was afraid to come into the shop.

For the baker, he saw this challenge as motivation to further strengthen his faith and took it as a call to pray.

[The phone calls] give me an opportunity to pray for people I wouldn’t know.

Eventually, the couple filed a complaint with the Colorado Civil Rights Commission citing discrimination.

Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) attorneys decided to step in the matter and defended Phillip’s stand. However, an administrative judge ruled that Phillips' position was not protected by the Fifth Amendment. Masterpiece Cakeshop was ordered to start accepting work orders of same-sex couples or cease designing wedding cakes.

About 40% of Masterpiece Cakeshop’s business is from designing wedding cakes. Consequently, attorneys at ADF filed an appeal at the United States Supreme Court challenging the judgment of the Colorado Civil Rights Commission.

On December 5, 2017, ADF presented Phillip’s case to the court. Finally, the United States Supreme Court ruled in favor of Phillips on June 4 2018, stating that there was no reason to “punish Jack for living and working consistent with his religious beliefs about marriage.” Justices voted 7-2 in favor of Phillips.

It has been a challenging period for Phillips, and his business has taken a major hit since the issue began in 2013. Still, he says his faith is strong, and he believes that this incident was just part of God’s plan.

I can trust Him and know that God is doing what he’s going to do. And if He’s chosen us to be a part of that, that’s quite an honor.”

There is no saying if further action will be taken by the couple who instigated legal proceedings.
