Peter Fonda Faces Backlash After Withdrawing 'Vulgar' Tweet About Taking Barron Trump From His Mother

Date June 22, 2018 13:32

Yesterday, actor Peter Fonda launched what seemed to be a personal attack against the Trump family on Twitter when he called out FLOTUS on the issue of family separation.

Fonda also insinuated that this might just be what Melania Trump needs to happen before she speaks to President Donald Trump about the family separation issue and urge him to take action.

Fonda’s tweet is a response to President Donald Trump’s insistence that his family separation policy would deter future illegal immigrants from attempting to cross the border with children. However, Fonda’s tweet is getting a lot of attention for the wrong reasons.

The tweet was part of a rant where Fonda also went after White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders and Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielson for their unflinching support for President Trump and his immigration policy.

However, just hours after the tweets went viral, Fonda issued a statement apologizing for the message which he acknowledged was offensive.

I tweeted something highly inappropriate and vulgar about the president and his family in response to the devastating images I was seeing on television. Like many Americans, I am very impassioned and distraught over the situation with children separated from their families at the border, but I went way too far. It was wrong and I should not have done it. I immediately regretted it and sincerely apologize to the family for what I said and any hurt my words have caused.

Fonda’s manager, Alan Somers, shared the apology with media outlets, including Fox News and The Daily Caller. But his tweet had already gotten the attention of the White House. The spokeswoman for the First Lady, Stephanie Grisham, informed The Daily Caller that the Secret Service had been “notified” of the tweet.

Other observers on Twitter have also called out Fonda, suggesting that he was not getting the due reprimand for his offensive attack against the First Family and Barron Trump. Some have even called for stiffer penalties, referring to cases in the past where celebrities were reprimanded for verbal abuse.

It seems there is little love for the Trumps among the Fondas. Jane Fonda is not a fan of the president either. In 2017, she unleashed a barrage against President Trump while speaking at the Emmy Awards. Barron Trump may not be in a position to respond to Fonda’s tweet, but it will not be surprising if his father, President Trump, does.
