Mary Kay Letourneau And Vili Fualaau: Disturbing Details About The Relationships Between A Convicted Sex Offender And Her Former Student
The absolutely bizarre relationships between Mary Kay Letourneau, a 34-year-old teacher, and her 13-year-old student, Vili Fualaau, shocked the world in 1997.
Letourneau had commenced a relationship with her 6th-grade student, Vili, whom she acted as a mentor to. Vili spent a lot of time in her home and became friends with the oldest of her four children from her marriage to Steve Letourneau.
It is not clear the exact moment when the relationship between teacher and her 13-year-old student became physical, but Letourneau became pregnant with the teenager's child in 1997.
How they were busted
They were discovered after by her husband who found the 'love letters' she had written to Vili.
And although her lawyers tried to get her off on the grounds that she suffered from a bipolar disorder, she got a 7-year sentence for statutory rape.
Even more disturbing was the fact that they continued their relationship while she served her prison term. In that time, she got pregnant again and had her second daughter with Vili.
In 2005, after she was released from prison, they got married.
An interview with ace journalist, Barbara Walters, in 2015, shed light into their life with their teenage daughters who simply know them as 'mommy' and 'daddy'.
They're no longer together
These days, they are separated, and Letourneau, now 56, still plays the role of mentor in Vili's life. He's 34 now.
She recently helped him navigate an encounter with law enforcement after he got in an accident while driving in Washington under the influence.
A source close to both of them says the convicted sex offender is committed to protecting her former student forever.
