"The Whole Thing Is A Shame": Kelly Ripa Speaks Out About The College Admissions Scandal

Date March 18, 2019

Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman are caught up in a major scandal. The two actresses and 48 other individuals have been charged in an elaborate college admissions scheme.

The scheme involved rich parents buying their kids’ way into elite colleges, such as getting the kids into schools of their choice on athletic scholarships, regardless of their actual abilities.

Kelly Ripa speaks out

Kelly spoke about the scandal on Live with Kelly and Ryan. While she admitted that college application and the test-taking process is a nightmare, kids should get into college based on their actual ability. She said:

Let me tell you something. As a parent who has gone through this process twice so far, test-taking is a nightmare. It is so exhausting ... for the student, for the parents, for everybody involved. Particularity if you are my kids' tutor, I would think it would be exhausting for you as well. You look at this and you go, 'If you have the money to afford a tutor, you already have an advantage.'

The host, who shares three kids with husband Mark Consuelos, said her oldest ones got into college by working hard (her youngest one, son Joaquin, is still in high school). Kelly joked:

I'm so glad this scandal broke after my kids went through [the college application process] because I know my daughter would have been like, 'Hey, can you call that man?

On a more serious note, the host added that the whole situation is unfair to the kids:

The whole thing is a shame and it's robbing the kids the chance for them to achieve [getting in] on their own.
