Woman Lost Her Toenails After Fish Pedicure

What is fish pedicure?

Fish pedicure is, probably, one of the most peculiar trends in beauty industry. Inspired by Asian traditions, this bizarre treatment involves soaking your feet in a tub of warm water, filled with 'Garra rufa' a breed of tiny fish. The latter nibble at your toes and remove the dead cells from the epidermis (the upper layer of your skin). The main purpose of the procedure is to exfoliate the skin and make your feet baby-smooth and soft.

Unfortunately, things do not always go as planned. One of the most recent examples – a woman, who lost her toenails as a result of a fish pedicure procedure.

This story may sound like a beauty horror tale or a myth. In fact, it might even lower your interest in new and upcoming SPA-trends for a while, and opt for the good-old (and safe!) classics. Anything to avoid such horrifying consequences as losing toenails after a beauty procedure – something a young woman in her 20s had to face after getting a fish pedicure. According to the woman’s dermatologist, Sheri Lipner, the procedure has resulted in a condition similar to onychomadesis – a disease caused by damage and malfunction of the nail matrix.

I do not recommend fish pedicures for any medical or aesthetic purpose. In addition to onychomadesis, there are also serious infections associated with fish pedicures.

Fish pedicure may be dangerous

Sheri Lipner's opinion is supported by the Prague Hygienic Station reports, which confirm that fish pedicure might be dangerous. According to the station’s director Jan Jarolímek, one of the main reasons to avoid this procedure is the inability to disinfect the fish and the water involved:

The risk of transmission of infection from fish to humans or from humans to humans (through water and fish), or from the water itself, cannot be excluded.
