An incredible discovery

When 27-year-old Eliza Curby gave birth to her baby daughter in 2016, she didn’t think of using any contraception, as she believed that a woman can’t get pregnant when she is breastfeeding. But the old wive's tale proved to be false.

When the doctor told Eliza she was pregnant again, this time with twins, six weeks after she welcomed her baby daughter, she couldn’t believe it.

The new mom and her partner had been living in a denial for a few weeks until Eliza made an appointment with the obstetrician she had when she was pregnant for the first time, who confirmed the crazy news.

Is it possible to get pregnant while breastfeeding?

Many women believe that if they are breastfeeding, they don’t need to use contraception. But it’s a risky business. Robert Zurawin, obstetrician and fertility specialist, says that women should use a form of birth control after they give birth if they don’t want to get pregnant again.

However, she admits that there is a contraceptive technique called the lactational amenorrhea method (LAM), which is based on the idea that breast milk can delay the return of menstruation. But there are specific rules women should follow in order to use it properly.

Another similar story

There are many more cases similar to Eliza’s. Becky John from Wales gave birth to 4 children in 11 months. John became pregnant just one week later she gave birth to her baby daughter. Soon she was shocked to discover she is expecting triplets.

So, the moral of the story is – if you don’t want to get pregnant straight after giving birth, you better think of using contraception as soon as possible.
