'They Are Disrespecting My Religion': Piers Morgan Blasts Stars At The Met Gala For Their Outrageous Outfits

Date May 11, 2018

The Met Gala Bal was one of the most spectacular and controversial events. This year’s theme was "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination". Stars showed up at the event dressed in costumes inspired by the Christian faith, particularly the Catholic one.

Despite the fanfare, one celebrity was far from pleased. TV show host Piers Morgan was more than outraged. On Tuesday, he published a scathing article on Daily Mail, slamming the stars who showed up wearing outfit inspired by relics of the faith and other significant moments.

Christianity, it would seem, is fair game for a mocking fashion parade

For Morgan, his main grouse is that he feels the organizers decided to use the Catholic theme in favor of other popular religious themes to avoid backlash.

The bottom line is that the Met Gala would never even consider an Islamic or Jewish theme for its big night. The organisers know full well that if they did, they'd be closed down within hours of it finishing. They chose Catholicism, and Christianity, because they calculated that we wouldn't mind as much.

Which stars got Morgan ticked off the most?

Bad girl Rihanna showed at the event dressed as the Pope but in all silver. She even had a matching Mitre to complete her outfit.

Jennifer Lopez wore a sassy number with slits way up her thigh. The dress was bedecked in multicolored jewels and had a massive cross emblazoned in front that was hard to ignore.

To me, this year's Met Gala crossed a line and was openly, brazenly disrespectful. By doing so, it confirmed itself as an organisation of rank double standards, because everyone knows they'd have never dared do it to Islam or Judaism. - Piers Morgan, Daily Mail

Kim Kardashian chose a sleek figure-hugging gold scale dress with crosses on her torso and thigh with plenty of arm on display.

As for Victoria Secret model Stella Maxwell, her costume of choice was a strapless dress with several images of the Virgin Mary plastered all over.

One of the more dramatic and bizarre outfits was worn by Sex and the City star, Sarah Jessica Parker. She appeared in a regal golden gown with red hearts and a train that flowed a few feet behind her. The icing on the cake was a headpiece depicting the nativity.

Not everyone is as angry as Piers Morgan

Despite the comments from Morgan, a lot of other people think there is no need for anyone to be even remotely upset. Apparently, the Vatican gave permission for the organizers to use the Catholic theme for this year’s event. They even provided some religious artifacts for display at the Met.

I know many people don't believe in any God or religion, let alone Catholicism, and I respect that. All I ask in return is for my beliefs not to be rudely disrespected. Just as I always respect other religions even if I don't believe in what they represent. - Piers Morgan, Daily Mail

This year’s event was in celebration of the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Benefit’s 70th anniversary. They raised over $12 million in total for the Met. This counts a large success, but there is no saying if there will be any further backlash from the media or oher Catholics in the future.
