According to The Associated Press, His Holiness said that it was the responsibility of world governments to “welcome, to accompany, to place, to integrate” as many refugees as possible to their countries. He, however, noted that this depends on how much the governments can accommodate.

Each country must do this with the virtue of government, which is prudence, and take in as many refugees as it can, as many as it can integrate, educate, give jobs to.

In his speech, he also highlighted the reality of immigration worldwide and the dire circumstances causing many people to flee their countries, even illegally.

We are living through a flood of refugees who are fleeing war and hunger.

Europe faces an immigration crisis of its own, with over 33,000 people in 2018 alone risking their lives in order to get there by sea. Statistics from the United Nations Refugee Agency says 771 have died from drowning so far.

Relations between President Donald Trump and Pope Francis have been far from pleasant. In the past, the outspoken leader of the Catholic Church has called out the American President for policies which he considered hypocritical.

In 2016, the Pope was critical of then Presidential Aspirant Trump’s message against immigrants, calling his position 'not Christian'. Trump, in a swift retaliation, suggested that Rome was safe from ISIS because he was President.

Again in 2017, the Pope spoke out against the President’s decision to repeal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA), the Obama Administration policy that safeguarded children who were undocumented in the United States.

President Trump recently issued an Executive Order putting a stop to the separation of children from their parents at US borders. However, he still faces criticism for not presenting a plan to reunite children or even ensure that the welfare of these children in holding is attended to.

Images from detention centers across America continue to spark outrage, largely because of the unconducive state of facilities provides. Most of the centers look more like concentration camps with children crying for their parents. Even managers of these detention centers have complained about the growing numbers of detainees.
