How A Gender-Reveal Party Turned Into A Massive Wildfire

Date October 2, 2018 12:52

A border patrol agent has been asked to pay a fine after he admitted to causing a wildfire during a gender-reveal party.

Things escalated quickly

Last year, Dennis Dickey accidentally started a 47,000-acre wildfire fire while celebrating his wife's pregnancy. It took up to 800 firefighters to extinguish the fire and as a result, Dickey faced charges.

The shocking event happened in April 2017. According to Dickey, he was trying to announce the gender of their child when he shot a target containing Tannerite. This is a legal substance but Dickey probably did not realize that it was explosive and it could detonate when shot.

The target Dickey was aiming for was supposed to reveal the baby's gender. It contained blue and pink powder.

When speaking to a judge last week, the patrol agent admitted that he was at fault, but the whole thing was an unexpected accident.

I feel absolutely horrible about it. It was probably one of the worst days of my life.

He has been ordered to pay $100,000 in fines whilst awaiting his sentencing, which would take place on October 9.

Thankfully, no lives were lost and no injuries were reported. But many people had to evacuate the scene while the firefighters battled the flames.

Another gender-reveal fail

This is not the first time that what was supposed to be a revelation of an unborn child's gender turned into a life-threatening fire.

A few months ago, a couple decided to celebrate their soon-to-be-born baby by setting up fireworks on a clothing rack. This already seemed like a bad idea from the beginning.

While no children were hurt, a few adults suffered some minor burns. We sure hope people will be more careful when literally 'playing with fire' like this, as things can go horribly wrong.
